Cardiology is a branch of medicine that concerns diseases and disorders of the heart, which may range from congenital defects through to acquired heart diseases such as coronary artery disease and congestive heart failure.

Angiography

Angiography involves the use of x-ray imaging to examine blood vessels. This highlights your blood vessels, allowing your doctor to see any problems.

Angioplasty

Angioplasty is a procedure used to open blocked coronary arteries caused by coronary artery disease. It can be done in an emergency setting.

Heart Bypass Surgery

Heart bypass surgery is when a surgeon takes blood vessels from another part of your body to go around, or bypass, a blocked artery.

Heart Valve Replacement

A surgeon removes the heart valve and replaces it with a mechanical valve or a valve made from cow, pig or human heart tissue. Valves made from living tissue are called biological tissue valves.

Aortic Aneurysm Surgery

This is the most common type of surgery to repair an aortic aneurysm, but it’s the most invasive. A surgeon replaces the weakened section of the aorta with a tube, or “graft,” made of a special fabric.

Heart Pacemaker Surgery

A pacemaker is a small, battery-powered device that prevents the heart from beating too slowly. To place a pacemaker, a doctor inserts one or more wires into a major vein under or near the collarbone.

Open Heart Surgery

Open-heart surgery involves cutting open and performing surgery on the muscles, valves, or arteries of the heart. Today, many new heart procedures can be performed with only small incisions, not wide openings.

Echo

An echo uses sound waves to show how blood flows through the heart and heart valves. Sensors attached to the chest and sometimes the legs check the heart rhythm during the test.
